I’ve seen a lot of new fresh shiny faces at the gym over the last few days as people make the usual New Year’s resolution to get healthy. I read an insightful article in Psychology Today about a phenomenon that we know all too well – people quickly get discouraged and stop going to the gym after a few short months. Here’s a link to the article just in case your print subscription to the publication has lapsed …

Not surprisingly, the rate of people sticking to their New Year’s resolutions drops over time to approximately 46% in their study. Here’s the math:
- 1 and 2 weeks – 71%
- 3 and 4 weeks – 64%
- 3 months – 50%
- 6 months – 46%
If you make it 3 months or more, the rate of attrition is just roughly 1% per month. Skeptics will tell you the gym will be empty by February – don’t believe them. You’ve got very good odds of winning in the gym membership lottery …I’ll bet you succeed.
