You’ve no doubt read that the BPA in plastic water bottles is a hazard to your health, not to mention the environment. BPA (Bisphenol A) has been linked to diabetes, asthma, cancer and altered prostate and neurological development. The EPA reported that the US produces some 31 million tons of plastic waste. Some cities and towns including Concord, MA have enacted bans on plastic water bottles.
Facing mounting political and consumer pressures, the plastics industry developed an alternative to BPA called BPS (Bisphenol S). Many of you have switched to non-BPA plastics in an effort to eliminate the risks and are using BPS plastics instead. A recent study conducted by the University of Texas has shown links from BPS to cellular disruption to the hormone estrogen. These effects were demonstrated within a matter of seconds and with extremely low dosage levels – similar to BPA. Drinking water throughout the day is a conscious decision for many of us for health reasons. It’s a great substitute for sugar and artificial sweetened beverages. Those handy little water bottles are so convenient that it’s tempting to use them but I’m going to make a concerted effort to use a more proven technology… a drinking glass.
