On Monday afternoon, a car crashed into the play area of Hanna’s (my daughter) day care. Fortunately all of the kids were inside, just waking up from their naps. They were scheduled to go outside for some fresh air at 4PM but fortunately, these events unfolded at 3:11PM. The car was driven by an 86 year old woman, a former school bus driver in town. Her husband (late 70’s) still drives a school bus in Dover. She dropped her mail off at the post office next door and then hit the gas (presumably instead of the brake) and proceeded to drive her Jaguar through the parking lot …over the lawn…through a sign…over a railing …and landing (inverted) in the daycare play area. You can see the video using the link below (while it’s still a live link).
Last evening, the Chief of Police, Robert Meaney spent an hour at the Beginning Years Daycare to talk about the incident. He and the landlord of the building talked about putting boulders around that area to prevent a similar incident happening in the future. It was a freak accident and the boulders are an extra measure of safety. I’m not feeling very reassured.
Don’t get me wrong, I think this particular Daycare is a safe and wonderful place to send your little one to school. The teachers (all 6 of them) tended to the 19 children in the school so well that none of the students even knew there was an accident. I’m not sure I could have responded with such calm and focus. While one teacher pulled the blinds, one read books, one emailed parents, and yet another called 911…pretty unbelievable teamwork in a crisis!
I’m not reassured in general because we lack laws that test drivers over a certain age. Driving is a privilege and not a right. As we all age, our response times and focus wane. At some point, it’s time to hang up the keys for good…preferably before one has a chance to do any damage. This was a close call…too close. The driver was cited and charged. We are all lucky – this could have been tragic…but it wasn’t…this time.
