Internet is 5th largest energy consumer in the world

I saw a recent post compliments of @billwarner about energy consumption by the Internet. In short, Emma Hutchings / PSFK and the folks at posted an article titled “If the Internet was a country it would be the 5th biggest energy consumer in the world.” Their graphic above shows that Facebook and Google are the largest energy hogs despite their well publicized efforts to be more energy efficient. This energy isn’t of the green variety through renewable energy sources (think coal and nuclear). To make matters worse, it’s growing at a rate of 12% per year fueled mostly by huge data centers – that’s a heck of a lot of “ping, power and pipe” and servers. The graph doesn’t look to be to scale – Facebook and Google don’t account for ½ of the energy consumed but they’re still a big chuck…and growing.
