How art influences entrepreneurial thinking

Many people ask me if my painting is a way of ‘relaxing’…the answer is an emphatic “No.” For me, painting is an often-times intense period of studying the details, perspective and light in a particular scene…really studying it to see what is there. One of the most common problems in painting and in business is actually seeing and understanding the real scene. Alpert Szent Gyorgyl said, “Discovery consists of seeing what everyone else has seen and thinking what no one else has thought.”

Most of us are too busy to take the time to think about the big-picture in our business lives. The entrepreneurs that we back are frantically working all hours of the day and night to build their products, establish distribution channels and are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit talented team members to help – thereby stressing the team even more. These are people who ‘forget’ to have lunch and don’t listen to the radio on the way home because their minds are racing so fast. Starting with a blank canvas can be intimidating at first but it can also be a way to break through to a new perspective. While there are inevitable setbacks in painting, there are no permanent failures…there’s always more paint as long as you have the courage to keep trying.
